Since The Grandmothers Gathering in Toronto 2 years ago, over 200 Grandmother groups have sprung up across Canada in solidarity with Grandmothers in Africa - their pledge? We will not rest until they rest.
Grandmothers are the saviors of Africa, currently caring for over 13 million orphans as HIV/AIDS slashed a swath through the middle generation of young mothers and fathers. Most grandmothers buried their own children and took on the care of their grandchildren.... what's more, when neighborhood children were left orphaned and abandoned, many grandmothers took in those children too. It is not uncommon to find a grandmother looking after 12 and even 20 or more children. All this on no resources and their own failing health. It's desperate times. And that's why women (and men) across this country are mobilized to do what we can to help the crushing burden.
