Recently I had my first visit to Mexico. Now I get it!
Now I understand why it’s so inspiring! It’s about colour; deep,
strong and unabashed color. Oh, we’re such a restrained culture. Really, you
have to get out to the East coast before you start to see some decent brightly
coloured houses in Canada!
Imagine living in a butter-yellow
town? This is Izamel on the Yucatan. It also had a huge egg-yolk-yellow
Franciscan monastery with red doors.
These pink glowing arches were in the courtyard of the monastery.
And, of course there are the graveyards! I’d love to be buried in such
a cheerful graveyard! My regular walk with the dog is through our local cemetery.
Uniform granite markers in sombre black, white, grey, and occasionally, rose. It’s restful, serious and sad. Imagine being overseen by this bright peach
chapel? How up lifting I found this Mexican cemetery. Hmmm....I wonder what it would be like
to have one of these little colourful houses plunked in the middle of one of our
graveyards.
Have you been inspired by Mexico’s colour? Do you have brightly coloured buildings where you live?
Tonight I'm off to London to see the V&A quilt show! I'll write about that in a couple of weeks. Happy spring!
